When a tutorial goes too long

When a tutorial goes too long

Nothing kills my patience with a new game faster than a tutorial that won't let go. There's a version of onboarding that teaches you the game, and a version that plays the game for you for twenty minutes while you tap where it points.

The best tutorials fold learning into real play. They give you one mechanic, let you use it, then hand you the next. They trust you to figure out the obvious parts instead of narrating every button.

I've started judging a game partly by how fast it lets me make a real decision. If I'm still watching forced prompts after fifteen minutes, that tells me the designers didn't trust their own systems to be clear.

If you can, look for a skip option. A lot of games bury one, and letting yourself stumble a bit is often more fun than being walked through a script.
